The current situation of COVID-19 infections continues to trend upwards, especially among young children aged 6 months to 1 year. This age group has the highest infection rate compared to older children and adults. Therefore, COVID-19 vaccination in children is important to protect them across all age groups.
Which groups of children should receive the COVID-19 vaccine?
The Royal College of Pediatricians of Thailand recommends the COVID-19 vaccine for children aged 6 months and older who are at high risk for severe COVID-19. This includes:
- Children aged 6 months to 1 year
- Obese children (Weight for Height ratio greater than +3 SD)
- Children with chronic respiratory diseases, including moderate to severe asthma
- Children with cardiovascular diseases, stroke
- Children with diabetes
- Children with genetic conditions, including Down syndrome, severe neurological impairments, and developmental delays
- Children with chronic kidney disease
- Children with cancer and moderate to severe immune suppression
*** Additionally, healthy children should consider receiving the COVID-19 vaccine starting from the age of 1 year.
Benefits of COVID-19 vaccination for children
COVID-19 vaccination for children stimulates the body to develop immunity against COVID-19. Research has shown that vaccination not only reduces hospitalization rates but also decreases mortality rates from COVID-19 infection. It is one of the preventive measures for COVID-19 in children that parents should not overlook.
How to reduce the severity of COVID-19 in children
COVID-19 infection can be prevented and its severity reduced through vaccination. Parents should consult a specialized pediatrician for the correct guidance and enhance their child’s immunity by appropriately vaccinating against COVID-19.
