Embryo and Egg Freezing Laboratory (EMBRYO & EGG FREEZING)
Embryo and Egg Freezing Laboratory (Embryology Laboratory) at the Fertility Center, Bangkok Hospital is a crucial step in managing infertility. The laboratory uses advanced embryo culture technology (Time – Lapse Embryoscope) which enhances the quality of embryo culture. The machine is equipped with a high-quality microscope camera that allows detailed monitoring of embryo development, where each embryo is cultured in an individual embryo culture well 1 to 1 allowing for optimal environment control for the growth of each embryo at every stage. Additionally, the development of embryos can be continuously tracked through high-resolution images, enabling the medical team and embryologists to use the data for accurate decision-making in every process without disturbing the embryos.
In vitro fertilization is a treatment for infertility that utilizes advanced medical technology to assist those who have difficulty in conception. The process involves external fertilization. Initially, the woman is stimulated with hormones to encourage the development of multiple follicles effectively before retrieving eggs from the ovaries via the vaginal canal. The eggs are then mixed with sperm in the laboratory using IVF/ICSI methods and cultured in an optimal environment for a duration of 5 – 6 days. After this, some cells of the embryo are biopsied for chromosomal examination and frozen for proper preservation, which can last for several years
Currently, the innovations in egg and embryo freezing have yielded satisfactory results using vitrification (Vitrification) technology, which rapidly lowers the temperature during freezing to prevent ice crystal formation in egg and embryo cells, significantly improving the survival rate of embryos after thawing and greatly increasing the likelihood of conception.
- IVF (In – Vitro Fertilization) is the process where selected sperm and eggs are mixed in the laboratory through natural fertilization (without using a needle to inject sperm into the egg) when fertilization occurs, the resulting embryo is cultured in the laboratory for approximately 5 – 6 days.
- ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) is a process where the strongest sperm is selected for fertilization by injecting a single sperm into the egg using a fine needle, which increases the chances of fertilization for those with sperm or egg quality issues resulting in infertility. The embryo is then cultured in the laboratory for approximately 5 – 6 days .
In summary, both 2 methods are processes of in vitro fertilization, but IVF is the natural mixing of sperm and egg in the laboratory, while ICSI involves directly using a needle to inject sperm into the egg to enhance the chances of fertilization.
Egg freezing (Oocyte Cryopreservation) is suitable for women who wish to preserve their fertility for the future, particularly those not ready to have children presently but want to preserve egg resources for future use, such as career-focused women, students, or those with certain health issues that may affect future fertility, such as cancer treatments involving chemotherapy or radiation . Egg freezing thus becomes an option to allow decisions about parenthood when one is ready. Initially, women are stimulated with hormones to encourage the development of a number of follicles effectively, after which eggs are retrieved from the ovaries via the vaginal canal for selection of viable eggs for freezing at -196 degrees Celsius .
Sperm freezing (Sperm Cryopreservation) is the process that employs sperm freezing technology to preserve sperm in suitable conditions for future use, such as when men want to bank sperm before undergoing treatment or surgeries that may affect sperm production or during in vitro fertilization (IVF) . Sperm freezing enables sperm to be used in the future, as the sperm is frozen at very low temperatures to prevent cell damage while maintaining its viability for later fertilization .
