Bangkok Hospital and Agnos Health Introducing the Smart Registration Innovation
Pioneer Using AI for Patient Registration

Bangkok Hospital collaborating with Agnos Health, a startup specializing in medical artificial intelligence, has developed the Smart Registration system. This advancement elevates patient registration through the use of AI technology, marking a significant step toward becoming a fully-fledged Smart Hospital. The Smart Registration system offers services through self-service kiosks or staff tablets. After two years of development, the system is now operational at the registration department of Bangkok Hospital’s headquarters.

Dr. Somrit Jantarapratin, Deputy CIO at Bangkok Hospital Group 1, stated, “We invest in what adds value to patients. The goal of developing this system is to streamline processes for our clients and establish service standards. Agnos has integrated various steps into a single process, such as patient registration and initial symptom screening, eliminating the need to take medical histories multiple times. This reduces both front-end and back-end procedures, inherently improving time management. The introduction of technology allows staff to focus on more valuable tasks. Administrative tasks will gradually be reduced. The immediate results of the Smart Registration system include significantly reduced waiting times for both new and returning patients. Another clear benefit is the elimination of paper-based documentation. Digital transformation should coincide with ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) principles, such as reducing paper usage.”

The Smart Registration system on kiosks utilizes AI technology to streamline various steps, including:

  • Patient identity verification using AI face recognition, matching patients’ faces with ID cards or passports, and adhering to IAL 2.3 identity verification standards.
  • Clinic recommendations through AI symptom checker developed by Agnos, providing preliminary patient history to recommend the appropriate clinic, reducing referral errors.
  • Automatic insurance verification via API connections or Robotic Process Automation (RPA), expedites the verification process and promptly informs patients of their insurance benefits.
  • E-consent system for obtaining patients’ PDPA consent via OTP through SMS or email, reducing unnecessary paper documents.
  • E-visit slips allow patients to track service status via LINE or the hospital’s application.

The Smart Registration system aims to reduce patient waiting times, streamline staff workflows, eliminate unnecessary paper usage, and digitize patient information to minimize data entry errors. The system aims to reduce patient registration steps by up to 45%.

Ms. Rungpech Witayamahawong, Head of the Registration and Medical Record Department at Bangkok Hospital headquarters, said, “Implementing the Smart Registration system enhances our brand image, showcasing technology that meets modern needs. Similar to how clients use smartphones or kiosks for movie ticket purchases, we offer the Smart Registration process, allowing patients to register directly at the kiosks without filling out paper forms. Additionally, the system conducts symptom screening before sending patients to the clinic. It addresses the policy of becoming a SMART Hospital by reducing steps, increasing accuracy, raising screening and referral standards, and reducing resource usage.

Ms. Shama Raksaras, a patient registration staff at Bangkok Hospital headquarters said, “The system developed by Agnos helps reduce the number of people waiting at the registration counter. Frequent visitors can use the kiosks directly, avoiding long waits. For those unfamiliar with the kiosks, our staff assists. The system is convenient and fast, reducing errors due to its accuracy. Most patients appreciate the convenience and speed.”

Ms. Nutnapak Naratthanaporn, another registration staff member, added, “The Smart Registration system significantly improves and streamlines processes. We can verify identities using ID cards with chip data for new patient registrations, ensuring accurate information. Compared to manual entry by staff, which can lead to errors, the system also automatically scans and inputs insurance information without redundant paperwork.”

Dr. Paphonwit Chaiwatanodom, CEO of Agnos Health, concluded, “The collaboration to develop the Smart Registration system is a crucial step forward. Agnos Health and Bangkok Hospital have jointly enhanced medical services using AI, allowing patients to access services promptly and efficiently. Besides Smart Registration technology, Agnos Health is also developing other technologies with various hospitals to elevate the country’s healthcare services.”
