Proper nasal irrigation helps remove mucus, dust, and pathogens from the nasal cavity, reducing sickness and infection for a cleaner nasal health, allowing for full breathability
Equipment
- Saline solution (0.9% Normal Saline)
- Container for the saline solution, such as a bulb syringe, a syringe (Syringe), a nasal irrigation device
How to perform nasal irrigation
There are several methods, including:
1) Tilting the face
Tilt your face above the sink and gently inject saline solution into the nostril that is higher up (hold your breath while irrigating). The saline will flow out through the lower nostril. Repeat on the other side
2) Bending forward
Lean over the sink, bend forward, inject saline solution into one of the nostrils (hold your breath while irrigating). The saline will flow out from both nostrils.
3) Lifting the face
Lift your face, hold your breath, pour saline solution into both nostrils and then bend forward, allowing the saline to gently flow out from both nostrils.
Note: Clean all equipment with plain water and let them dry
Precautions
- Incorrect practice might damage the nasal mucosa, causing injury and bleeding in the nose
- If blowing your nose or irrigating too forcefully, it may cause ear fullness or middle ear inflammation
- Choking (if breath is not properly held)
